DIY | CANVAS
My moms birthday is coming up and I wanted to make her something special. A few months ago I was browsing my belovedWeHeartIt and I came across this print. Mother's day was coming up around that time but I was still living away from home for college and I didn't really have the time to recreate it! This little DIY is really inexpensive but super cute and thoughtful.
What you will need :
- Card (scrap/cheap card to make stencils)
-Stanley blade/cutting knife
-Pencil
-PVA glue
-Canvas of your choosing (mine cost around €2 at a local shop)
-Paint in colour of your choosing (Acrylic paint works the best although poster paint is fine too)
-White poster paint (to paint the canvas)
-A few paint brushes (maybe two small ones, a medium and a large)
1. To start off, choose what you want it to look like. Maybe sketch it out.
2. Then, using the pieces of card make stencils of the print you have chosen to make.
3. Using the cutting knife, carefully cut out the letters. Be sure to keep the little circles from the insides of 'd's 'o's 'a's etc as you'll need them later when you're using your stencils.
4. Take your canvas and using the poster paint and the medium/large brush (white or whatever colour you want) apply 2 coats of paint, allowing one to dry before applying the other.
5. Once the paint has dried take one of your stencils and lightly cover the back of it with your PVA glue using a paint brush. Stick it to the canvas and let it dry for about a minute.
6. Taking your coloured paint and a small paint brush apply the paint onto the canvas through your stencil. Once you've painted in the word peel off the stencil (the glue won't be completely dried so the stencil should come off easily, if some pieces of card are stuck to the canvas, take a tweezers and gently peel them off)
7. Repeat to finish off your print.
8. Leave it to dry for about an hour and then using the white paint again give the canvas another coat. Being careful not to mess up any of the print. If you do, just take some of the colored paint and fix it.
9. Allow the canvas a night to dry. Once dried it's ready to give to your special someone! Or if you're keeping it for yourself, power to you!! ;)
This is the canvas I made for my mother, I really hope she likes it. I think it turned out very well and the white really makes the pink pop!
I played around with the print a bit and the great thing about it is that you really can make it your own. Use different colours, pick different designs and fonts. Also it really doesn't have to be perfect, those little imperfections add to the character of it! I think inspirational quotes could look really pretty and would be a lovely housewarming present! This DIY is also so cheap! A lot of the things you will need, you probably already have laying around at home! In all this DIY took about 2 hours, that includes sketching out your stencils, painting etc, then I left it for the evening to dry. I've already decided on a few more prints that I want to make, for both myself, friends and family. I plan on making THIS next for myself. I really hope this was helpful or inspirational - get crafting! :)
