Winter Skincare Tips | From A Beautician

  • One Word…Sunscreen

Sunscreen is just as important in winter as in Summer. Wearing sunscreen on exposed skin, like your face, neck, chest and hands - especially when the sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., will keep you protected from damaging rays. Opt for a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protection. The Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster is a great product that you can add into any facial creams. Add a few drops into your moisturiser in the morning. Check it out here.

  • Check Your Environment.

In the colder months you will notice how dry the air can get indoors when the heat is on. The drier the air, the drier the skin. A great solution for this is to add a humidifier in the room that you spend the most time. The added humidity in the air will help your skin stay hydrated. For us in Ireland, humidity generally is quite high so we don’t have to worry too much about this step but it’s something to keep in mind if you are struggling with super dehydrated skin. Of course, winter is harsher than summer on our skin. Out in the open the combination of low humidity plus strong winds can lead to super dry and uncomfortable skin, so remember to wrap up. Consider using a barrier cream if you tend to spend a lot of time outside. The Dermalogica Barrier Repair is amazing, it feels so velvety on the skin. Check it out here.

  • Think About Your Diet

With a direct connection between the gut and skin health, increasing your daily intake of fats can help with dry skin. A diet rich in healthy fats like nuts, olive oil, and avocados can really benefit your skin. Diuretics like caffeine and alcohol will cause dehydration, be mindful of your consumption of these. If you’re trying to up your water intake I highly recommend getting a big reusable water bottle. I use this 2.2L bottle, that I got from Amazon and I will fill it up in the morning and try to slowly sip it throughout the day. It’s very useful for anyone who always forgets to drink water.. like me! Here is the link to the bottle.

  • Exfoliate Your Skin

Opt for chemical exfoliation over mechanical. Meaning, stay clear of facial scrubs with gritty formulas. These types of exfoliators are extremely rough and can damage your skin. You are better off using a chemical exfoliator such as a mild glycolic or lactic acid. Using an exfoliator like this can really help dehydrated and dull skin. You shouldn’t use this type of product daily, rather, once or twice a week. You will notice when your skin is properly exfoliated, creams and serums will be able to penetrate your skin better.

  • Use Antioxidants

Antioxidants are perfect for year-round use. No matter the climate, our skin gets attacked by free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for breaking down our skin's collagen, resulting in unflattering skin blemishes like wrinkling, dark spots, fine lines and loose, sagging skin. To prevent this, use products with vitamin C.

  • Use A Heavier Face Cream

Changing to a super hydrating moisturiser during the winter months can transform your skin. Look for creams that contain ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Ceramides help protect your skin’s barrier, which easily breaks down during the winter.
