LETS TALK | WILL I STAY IN DUBLIN?
I'm writing this during my 2 hours commute to work, sat on the 14 bus, stuck in traffic. I feel like when I was younger I had planned, like many others, to leave Ireland immediately after leaving college. When I was in college in 2013 I was studying French and Spanish, understandably I wanted to move to a country speaking either of the language as I was learning it.
Before my erasmus year, I met Stas. I decided to stay with him in Dublin and defer college to decide if I was happy with what I was doing. During that time I realised that this course I was doing, was not for me. It was boring and I couldn't see myself in any of the career options after. So instead of just sucking it up and graduating, I quit college and got married! haha
From the time I had met Stas, in 2014, I had started to ask him to teach me Russian. On one of our first dates he bought mr one of those tourist Russian phrase books. We would laugh at how terrible my accent was as I tried to read the phonetically spelt words. From then until now, April 2017, I have continued to learn Russian. Now, I feel like I can speak with a pretty good accent and because of my Russian classes I can read and write pretty good too. So, because of this, learning a new language and experiencing a new culture, I want to move to where Stas is from, Odessa UA. Like anyone learning a new language you have to be submerged to become fluent. Seeing the level that Stas' English was at when I first met him and to see how great he is now, gives me inspiration! (well done stanni)
But it's not just because of me wanting to learn the language, that I want to leave Dublin. Everything in Ukraine seems more possible than here. Dublin....is....ESSPENSIFF... (that word is -expensive-) Like really, everything. Working full time you can afford a nice enough apartment and have some spare money but buying a property here is completely out of the question. Unless anyone has a spare 600,000EUR laying around? So much money, it's not as if Dublin is this amazing metropolis for these crazy prices. It's a small city, with limited things to do here. Especially if you don't have a car. Even a train ticket to travel to Mayo to see my family, is 40EUR each. So 80EUR. That's crazy.
For now, we're settling here. We are lucky enough to have a nice apartment (even though it's so f**king expensive) and we have our little big kitty Bablo. I don't know how we would get him to Ukraine. That would involve 2 plane journeys and quarantine for him :( no thanks. But everytime we go to Ukraine, it makes me want to move even more. We will see. Let me guys know in the comments below what you think of where you live!!
